London – Yardley’s, the British cosmetics company, is backing a special series of pop shows by leading British acts in a promotion under the banner of “The London Look.”
The new range of Yardley cosmetics called the London Look are to be launched in Europe, and at each show, Yardley’s will give every girl in the audience a sample and a souvenir EP record manufactured by EMI.
The international sales division of EMI will issue in Europe a series of four albums on the Regal label which will be made available through the trade in the territories visited by the shows. The album sleeve will depict Yardley models. A special bus will visit the cities where the shows are staged, and a team of Yardley consultants will give advice on makeup. A “London Look” train with Radio Luxembourg disk jockeys, will run through France.
The shows will feature Herman’s Hermits, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, the Procol Harum and other British acts. The tour begins April 21 in Hamburg and will then visit Berlin (26) followed by dates in France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland. On the French dates, Emperor Rosko will introduce the shows.

Science Fiction was “in the air” and this film, an Oscar winner, is certainly a milestone. Did it inspire Howard & Blaikley to write “Ark 2” the following year ?

Starting with Beat-Club 29, the German and foreign viewers and the listeners who tuned in to the BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service) Saturday Show, were asked to choose the best act of the monthly show, to be repeated in the following programme. The aim being to choose the Top 1968 performer at the end of the year. The voters also had to choose their favourite Album among ten LP’s presented by Uschi Nerke.
25.000 postcards were sent in this first month and the results were:
Favourite Performance: 4) The Rolling Stones with “2000 Light Years from Home”, 3) The Beatles with “Lady Madonna”, 2) Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich with “Legend of Xanadu” and 1) Manfred Mann for “Mighty Quinn”, which was repeated in this programme.
Favourite Album: 4) Their Satanic Majesties Request, 3) Magical Mystery Tour, 2) Golden Hits of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich and 1) Horizontal by The Bee Gees, who were featured in a film performing “Harry Braff”.
So Dave Dee & Co came twice second, beating The Beatles and The Stones each time…

Eurovision Song Contest, Royal Albert Hall, Westminster, London, England (Live)
The Contest took place in London, because Sandie Shaw had won the 1967 edition with “Puppet On A String”, bringing the United Kingdom a victory for the first time since this TV competition was created in 1956. The British entry in 1968 was Cliff Richard with “Congratulations”.
These two songs were written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, who also penned two album tracks for Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich: “We’ve Got A Good Thing Goin’” and “Bang!” in 1966.
Cliff Richard finished second, behind Spanish singer Massiel with “La La La”.

Wow – The Moby Grape. Columbia CS 9613 (S)
There is a lot happening in this new Moby Grape album including a track that has to be played at 78 r.p.m. The package is a wild electronic affair that’s musically inventive, fresh and vigorous. Included as a bonus is a special LP titled “Grape Jam” which has some of the group’s impromptu works.
The album climbed the Billboard Top LP’s Charts up to #20
The last track on side one is played at 78 r.p.m. and track 4 is "Can't Be So Bad" which concludes with a brief, spoken reminder from Skip Spence to change the turntable speed for the next track. This song is actually the original version of what D B M & T performed as "Talk To You" for a BBC session in late 1969.

As the tour continued, so did the pranks. Ian "Tich" Amey still chuckles at the memory of one little jape in particular. "They used to all take a little solo spot, and Robin was due to go on stage and do his bit. They used to frequent our dressing room a lot, go in and out, and he said, 'Oh, I must go now, I'm [due] on stage,' and we said, 'No, you're not going,' and we literally closed the door on him. 'You're not going anywhere,' we repeated. 'Ahhhh!' he cried followed by a loud 'Bang, bang, bang, bang.' 'I must go on!' he said, 'I must go - you have to let me go!' 'No, no, sorry, stay there!' We did let him go in the end but the band were playing away like good 'uns, waiting for the 'singist' to come on stage."
As Trevor "Dozy" Davies recalls, the fraternising between the two groups was in spite of Stigwood's attempts to keep the bands apart, concerned that over-mingling would diminish The Bee Gees' top billing status. "There was this thing at that time, where the powers that be wanted them just to stay in their dressing room and be the stars of the show! But they didn't want that - half the time they were in our dressing room. Even though their management still wanted them to stay away and just be the superstars. It didn't happen."
Their socialising wasn't just confined to show time either. Maurice has long been associated with Aaou Martins from those days of heady excess and Tich accepts some responsibility for Mo's infatuations with that particular make of car. "I had an [Aston Martin] DB5, and we were actually on tour with them at the time, and we happened to be in Salisbury, which is our home town. We had some time off and [Maurice] saw my car, and he says, 'Ooh! I'd like to have a little spin in that.' So I took him out to a place called the Amesbury Flats and got him up to about 120mph. He quite liked it, and decided that he would have one. I was driving, because he was still a learner, and I didn't have any L-plates! And no, I wasn't going to let him drive it.
"So, he quite enjoyed the ride," Tich narrated. "and next minute he went out and bought a DB6, which was the next one up. I can remember seeing him, with one of the roadies sat next to him, and it seemed quite strange, somebody learning to drive in an Aston Martin DB6, going down the Bayswater Road!"
